decent package in prime location

One of the first AC locations in Greater China and the only Marriott properties in the historical central Suzhou, the location here at AC Suzhou was definitely the selling point that got me onboard. However, with the amount of local competitors in the same market but undercutting the AC in room rates, was it a worthy experience?

When I arrived, the first thing that impressed me was, well, the location. Bus stops were right downstairs, subway station was 5 minutes walk away, and major tourist attractions were mostly within walking distance (in good weather of course) – I’d find it unfair to call it anything but a prime location.

The hotel itself was brand new with freshly new lobby and bar/restaurant area. Even though the hotel was in the historic part of the city, the entrance did not feel out of place – in fact it blended in quite well. The staff was mostly proactive and helpful. The duty manager offered me interesting information about the hotel and the city, and offered to help me with my bags both at check-in and check-out – he absolutely did not have to, since bellhops are not a thing with AC. However, interactions with some staff members were somewhat dry.

Also new was the room design. I was upgraded into a “superior room”. After experiencing the room first hand though, I was a bit confused. I loved that it felt simplistic and functionality-focused, and the overall design was quite modern (albeit a bit plain). However, the small size (I was not able to find a spot to open my luggage without blocking one side of my bed completely), semi-blocked view and the open bathroom and closet area very much reminded me of the new Fairfield properties in APAC. I’m not sure if this was even justified, but the idea of this hotel being a Fairfield but “dressed up” like an AC and charging a premium per night as such left a sour taste in my mouth when I was there.

Sitting corner and view, the little jar thing on the table was the welcome drink (plum juice)

I found The restaurant had some lovely staff as well, although breakfast quality was not exactly top notch and very veggie-heavy, and the wonton “chef” did not seem/sound like he was enjoying his job too much. During busier hours the small sitting area got pretty crowded as well, but I’ve seen worse.

Decent breakfast selection

Overall, I’d still acknowledge that the hotel was solid by most standards, but it was arguably more suitable for solo/couple tourists that are traveling light. If they have larger rooms I would love to stop by again and try them out, but as it stands, the value proposition of the local competitors in the area still outweighs the Marriott brand name (let alone AC, which is not well-acknowledged in APAC at all). Or, just stay at one of the full-service properties out there and taxi around.
