The Le Meridien Shenyang Heping, being Shenyang’s first Marriott property in the downtown area, was in my opinion a good showcase of the brand. Location was right in the middle of the old city, and owned by a company with Japanese background, the rooms and public areas were tastefully appointed with a subtle Japanese hint behind some elements, especially the bathroom fixtures (washlet bidets, Japanese shower room/tub combo, etc.). The restaurant was nice, breakfast was enjoyable (especially the pastries) and lounge staff was awesome. I also appreciated the suites that I got during my two longer stays – both were spacious and well-furnished, and the amount of natural light was awesome.

That being said, I was not able to sleep well during my stay because, well, the suite would not cool down beyond 26C. To make matters worse, the front desk promised cooling fans and ice buckets but neither were delivered – turned out they ran out of cooling fans before they got to my room because virtually everyone complained. This seemed to be a common problem in East Asia especially in areas where outdoor temperatures do not get too high in late spring, since I experienced this at multiple hotels in different cities. The compressors do not get turned on and instead cooling is strictly done with circulation. It’s all well and good and eco-friendly etc. until one day the temperature randomly shoots up to 30+. This overshadowed the many merits and I did leave sweaty and exhausted both times, however everything else was promising.
